"More Than You Dreamed!"

Columbus is the capital of Ohio, the county seat of Franklin County and the largest city in the state. We have been recognized by several major news sources as the No. 1 up-and-coming high-tech city (Forbes Magazine), No. 7 best city in country for business (Market Watch), No. 13 in nation for most capital investment projects (Site Selection Magazine), top ten most livable city (CNN/Money Magazine) and 7th most high-tech city (Popular Science Magazine). We are served by three state and four U.S. highways, plus interstates 70 and 71.

Columbus was first laid out in 1812 and incorporated in 1816. Our city was not the original capital, but the state legislature chose to move the state government after it was located at both Chillicothe and Zanesville for a short time. The statehouse was built in 1814. Columbus grew quickly in its first few years, having a population of 700 people by 1815. It officially became the county seat in 1824. By 1834, the population was 4,000 people, officially elevating Columbus to "city" status.

We receive 35 inches of rain per year and 25 inches of snowfall. The number of days with any measurable precipitation is 123. On average, there are 178 sunny days annually. The July high is around 85 degrees, and the January low is 23.

Columbus City Schools is comprised of 142 elementary, middle and high schools, including a number of alternative schools. The suburbs have their own districts as well. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Columbus operates numerous parochial elementary and high schools. There are also four top-rated private schools in the area.

Our city is home to the Ohio State University, as well as many other educational and technical options including Franklin University, Ohio Dominican College, Columbus State University and the Columbus College of Art & Design. The city's suburbs also boast several other institutions of higher education.

The Columbus Metropolitan Library has been serving residents of Central Ohio since 1873.

Even with all the hustle of the big city, Columbus still offers plenty of places to enjoy the outdoors. In July 2007, Shape magazine recognized Columbus as one of five cities having big outdoor appeal. Among the highlights is the Olentangy River Greenway, a 13-mile path that links downtown Columbus to Worthington. Along the way is Antrim Park, a popular spot for runners, bikers and fishermen.

Highbanks Metro Park will please hiking enthusiasts with 11 miles of trails, which feature 100-foot shale bluffs. For those who prefer competitive sports, Fred Beekman Park offers free access to its volleyball and basketball courts and equipment.

The Columbus Blue Jackets, a member of the National Hockey League; the Columbus Crew, the city's professional soccer team; and the Columbus Clippers professional baseball team provide residents with additional sports entertainment.

Columbus also has a booming cultural life. The Columbus Museum of Art, the Ohio Historical Society and the Center for Ohio Science and Industry are three of the city's important museums. Columbus also has one of the nation's finest zoos and water parks. Other recreation includes four Chiller ice rinks, more than 100 public and private golf courses plus harness and thoroughbred horse racing. The area is also host to the Komen Race for the Cure, the Columbus Marathon and the Arnold Sports Festival, the largest fitness weekend in the world.

Columbus is a big city with an outdoor feel plus plenty of culture and history for everyone to enjoy. Stop by our United Country offices so we can open your world to ours. It truly lives up to its motto ... "More than you dreamed!"
